Response to Getting the BS out of Grading:

3 years ago I would have whole heartedly agreed, but that was before I began the transition from idealist to the cynic I am today.

Life is bullshit, schools are where we learn to deal with that fact. The pseudo-objective grading systems used in colleges and high schools effectively prepare you for the fact that you will NEVER be judged objectively. When asking for a raise at your job your boss will make his/her decision based on a highly subjective assessment of you performance. Not a carefully constructed comparison of your productivity compared to that of your coworkers. When selling a product, it doesn't matter if your product is better; the one that is marketed best will sell. The only way to achieve absolute objectivity is for us, humans, to become entirely objective. This will never happen. Yes grades do not you knowledge of the subject matter; but instead they measure your abilities at LIFE. In essays, the ability to make yourself sound smarter than you are. In multiple choice tests, your ability to make educated guesses. In presentations, your ability to convey a message to groups of people. All of these things are necessary for conventional success. True, some people do not need school to learn these things and those are the people you mentioned who succeeded without finishing school. Grades are bullshit, life is too.

On one level I appreciate your idea of a war on bullshit. We all get frustrated with what we think is bullshit. But did it ever occur to you that this war might itself be bullshit?

You make a distinction between the truth and bullshit (a la Harry G. Frankfurt at Princeton and his book "On Bullshit"). But I would contend that the truth is merely bullshit that someone has convinced himself or others is not bullshit. It's the ultimate bullshit in that sense, because it blinds people to its nature as bullshit. The truth, I think, is merely a prejudice so fundamental one is unable to see it.

This is an unhappy thought for many people, because it's nice to have black and white distinctions (truth/bullshit). It's nice to have solid ground to stand on. But I submit that the world is a lot more complicated and unstable of a place than that and one needs to be very careful what prejudices of one's own one is invoking when labeling another person's position or statements bullshit.
