@Rob,

Thanks for the comments. At this point our truth-evading culture is probably so extreme that only large urban centers will have sufficient no-BS, fitness-oriented subcultures to support fluff-free gyms.

I found this article to be the most eloquent and succinct way to describe all my feelings about gyms. My question to you is do you think a gym that only had free weights, benches, boxes etc. would be economically feasible. I feel that between craigslist, goodwill and home depot, I could create a gym with more than adequate equipment for training in any sport. While I'm not a certified trainer by any means, I am self educated because I had to be. I teach gymnastics, parkour, was a division one athlete, and have suffered many serious injuries due to terrible coaching and trainers. It is obvious from posts like yours that we are not alone in wanting a gym that works without all the fluff. I know there are plenty of good, smart trainers and athletes out there without jobs or places to work out because of the ridiculousness of the fitness industry. It is my belief that there has got to be a market for gyms that sell the cold hard truth and the legitimate means to get functionally fit. Not everyone has the same goals and like you said, these one size fits all machines are absolutely awful. I would love to start a gym based on that premise but I lack business experience or capital. Anyway, sorry for the rant, I would really like your email address so we can talk a bit more without the public forum setting. Feel free to write me with any thoughts.
